Banana or dessert bananas is trivial names for edible berries. These berries derived from large flowering herbs within the genus Musa. The fruits (as they are called in daily speech; technically they are berries), may have different size, color and firmness, but are often long and curved, with soft, starchy pulp enclosed by a shell that may be yellow, purple or red when the fruit is ripe and usually green when it is ripe.
The fruits grow in clusters hanging from the top of the plant. Most dessert bananas originate from hybrids of several different species from the banana genus and are therefore scientifically placed in the Musa dessert banana group.
The banana originates from southeast Asia and was known in Europe as early as ancient times. It was later been introduced to Africa and especially to Central America. To point out in Africa it is both an important food product and an export product.
The word banana comes from the Spanish and Portuguese words for the banana, “banana”, which in turn is probably borrowed from a language in Congo.
